Wireless stethoscope wins 'Innovation of Year' award
A Bluetooth-driven stethoscope that wirelessly transfers sound waves from the heart and lungs to a computer has won Popular Science ’s “Innovation of the Year” award. The 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscope, produced by St. Paul, MN-based 3M Health Care and Stamford, CT-based Zargis Medical, is the first such device to use Bluetooth technology for sound transference, according to Debra Rectenwald, vice president and general manager of 3M’s Infection Prevention division. The stethoscope and accompanying software help clinicians identify suspected heart murmurs and determine whether the patient needs an echocardiogram test, which is a conclusive but also expensive evaluation method, according to Zargis Medical Chief Executive Officer John Kallassy. The innovation honor was part of Popular Science’s annual “Best of What’s New Awards,” in which the publication selects 100 winners who “represent the highest level of achievement in their fields,” Popular Science Editor-in-Chief Mark Jannot said. http://www.zargis.com/index-5.php?press_id=43

Wipro introduces wireless patient monitoring system in India
Bangalore, India-based information technology services firm Wipro Technologies has developed a gateway that uses wireless technology to collect data remotely from medical devices such as blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, pedometers and patient weighing scales. The gateway uses Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM), which provides better coverage in remote parts of India than broadband or fixed-line dial-up connections, according to Wipro Technologies General Manager of Medical Devices R. Manimaran. The gateway allows transmission of real-time medical data to application servers, physicians’ handheld devices and hospital systems, and supports video and audio conferencing interactions between patients and doctors, and between doctors consulting with each other. Wireless technologies such as Bluetooth are fully supported, Manimaran said. http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article...

High-speed scanner finds previously unseen heart problems
A cutting-edge chest scanner that helps doctors detect previously invisible heart problems has been implemented at a handful of London medical facilities. The Siemens Definition Flash CT can perform a scan of an entire heart in 250 milliseconds – less than half a heartbeat – and still offer high image quality despite the heart’s movement, according to Prof. Anthony Mathur at The London Chest Hospital (LCH). This makes it possible to spot problems that might have been missed by other scanners, Mathur notes. In addition, the unit’s high speed exposes patients to the lowest possible dose of radiation, according to Dr. Ceri Davies, clinical director of the Cardiac CT service at LCH. The London NHS Trust and St. Bartholomew Hospital (Barts) also received the system as part of a $5.8 million [USD] biomedical research award from the National Institute for Health Research.    http://www.qmul.ac.uk/media/news/items/smd/20753.html

Browser-based patient data application WebWorks released
Dallas, TX-based technology firm BRIT Systems has released a browser-based application that gives Internet-using physicians with immediate, cost-effective access to patient medical images and medical reports. WebWorks operates without any downloads, including Flash and was designed for viewing by referring physicians and their patients or for low-volume review by radiologists, according to BRIT Systems President Shelly Fisher. The application can be easily integrated with the company’s UrgentWorks critical results reporting and SpeechWorks voice recognition programs, Fisher said. WebWorks’ advanced image analysis and review tools include a timeline view of prior studies, opening multiple patient and studies at the same time via tabs, and advanced image formatting.  http://www.dotmed.com/news/story/10776/

Telephone care reduces depression in coronary bypass patients
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients who received follow-up care by phone experienced a lower rate of depression than those who received traditional in-office doctor care, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSM). “Bypassing the Blues: Telephone Treatment for Depression Post-Bypass Surgery” was the first trial that examined the impact of collaborative care strategy for treating depression after an acute cardiac event, according to the study’s principal investigator, Bruce Rollman M.D., associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at UPSM. From 2004 to 2007, investigators recruited 453 post-CABG patients from seven Pittsburgh-area hospitals, including 302 officially classified as depressed. Half of the intervention patients reported a 50 percent or greater reduction in mood symptoms eight months after surgery, according to the report. The study was published in the Nov. 18 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/302/19/2095?home

UK city plans to provide free wireless Internet to all residents
Swindon, United Kingdom, hopes to become the UK’s first city to offer free wireless Internet access to all of its residents. A $1.7 million [USD] project to build a “WiFi Mesh” would create blanket Wi-Fi coverage through a network of 1,400 Internet access points, according to Rikki Hunt, chief executive officer of Digital City UK Ltd., which will run the network. The service will be funded by a combination of public and private money, with a goal of eventually making a profit when residents opt to move up to a faster, subscription-based access. The mesh has the potential to provide free Internet phone calls, which could save healthcare professionals a significant amount of money, Hunt notes. The Wiltshire, England-based city’s 186,000 residents currently use more Internet broadband service per capita than anywhere else in the UK. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/...

RemedyMD develops national remote monitoring registry
Salt Lake City-based RemedyMD has developed the country’s first nationwide clinical registry for remote monitoring technologies. According to Gary Kennedy, founder and chief executive officer of RemedyMD, the registry was developed to help clinicians and researchers identify which remote patient monitoring and management technologies are most appropriate for specific patient populations. The registry compares the effectiveness of new remote patient monitoring and management methodologies – including telemedicine, Internet and remote sensing technologies – on resource utilization, workforce needs, net healthcare expenditures, requirements for large-scale deployment, and traditional “in-person” care in managing chronic disease, especially in rural settings. RemedyMD is seeking additional partners who have existing data that addresses the specific needs of medical device researchers; interested parties are invited to visit www.remedymd.com/cer100/remote_tech.html for more information. http://www.remedymd.com/news...

Pilot programs on chronic disease management on rise
Increasing numbers of elderly persons are being prompted to use remote patient monitoring tools as a way to lower healthcare costs and improve chronic disease care, according to report from the Washington Post and Kaiser Health News . Noting that seniors and other with chronic conditions often end up in the emergency room if they forget to take medications or have their health properly monitored, various home healthcare providers are launching pilot programs to determine the effectiveness of remote monitoring technology at patients’ homes. More than 80 percent of healthcare spending focuses on patients with one or more chronic diseases, according to Louis Burns, vice president of Intel Digital Health Group. That has attracted bigger players such as GE Healthcare and Intel, who last spring announced a $250 million joint plan to develop wireless products that can easily connect patients to physicians when needed. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content...
