Study cites savings from biennial telemedicine-based eye screenings
Telemedicine alone, or telemedicine combined with periodic dilated eye evaluations, can help the healthcare system save an estimated $200 million annually by offering eye screenings every other year for the estimated 9 million people with diabetes who are at low risk of diabetic retinopathy progression, according to a new study by researchers at RTI International, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and the University of Wisconsin. The study, released ahead of print on the online website of Health Services Research , says the biennial screenings were a cost-effective alternative to the current practice of annual eye examinations. Negative perceptions about computer-based decisions could impede adoption
Patients' perception of evidence-based decision support tools, and physicians who use computer programs to make decisions, might be yet another barrier to their adoption. The problem is twofold: Some patients are skeptical of docs who need a computer to help them make a diagnosis. And some physicians don't want to be seen as being too reliant on technology. No matter what patients and doctors think, widespread adoption by physicians and their patients is inevitable, according to G. Daniel Martich, M.D., CMIO at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Full Story

Scotland first in telemedicine within the U.K., says SCT's top clinician
Distance and access issues forced Scotland to get serious about telemedicine, so that today Scotland is ahead of England in remote care of patients within the U.K., says James Ferguson, clinical lead at the Scottish Centre for Telehealth. Ferguson acknowledges no country has implemented a national telehealth solution, chiefly due to inertia among healthcare professionals - though he adds the recession has led to a slight change in their attitudes toward adopting telemedicine. "First patient contact should always be via ICT" or information and communication technology, Ferguson says, adding: "We have got to change the culture of the health service." Full Story
